Despite its troubles, Cyberpunk 2077 reportedly had the biggest digital launch in history
Research firm estimates 10m copies were sold
Cyberpunk 2077 had the biggest digital video game launch in history, both in terms of units sold and revenue generated during its release month.
That’s according to Nielsen’s SuperData, which said in its latest digital market report that the game sold 10.2 million copies in December 2020.
The market research firm’s sales figure includes copies that were refunded, but it said its data shows that these “did not substantially affect the game’s aggregate sales”.
SuperData said 80% of Cyberpunk 2077’s digital sales in December were on PC.
Digital sales would have been even greater had the game not been delisted from the PlayStation Store after it released with a host of technical issues.
The PC version of Cyberpunk 2077 sold 4.72 million copies via pre-orders alone, according to CD Projekt, making it the fastest-selling PC game of all-time.
The company later claimed that Cyberpunk 2077 had sold over 13 million copies as of December 22.
Following Cyberpunk 2077’s troubled launch, CD Projekt pledged to improve the overall experience via future updates, but also said customers not wanting to keep the game could opt for a refund.
Players who took CD Projekt up on its offer have started getting their money back – and some are reporting that they have not yet been asked to return the game.
Several users who chose to get their money back told Vice that they have now received a refund through PayPal but have not yet been asked to send the game back in the case of physical copies, or had their digital copy removed from their console software library.
Retailers began heavily discounting Cyberpunk 2077 little more than a month after its release, with Best Buy recently offering the PS4 and Xbox One versions for $29.99, down from $59.99 at launch.
