Minecraft Earth is shutting down in June
“Current global situation” to blame for the closure of the mobile game
Mojang has announced that it will be shutting down Minecraft Earth on June 30, 2021.
Released in late 2019, the mobile title offers players the ability to build in AR and features a location-based game in which users can gather resources and discover mobs as they travel the real world.
“Minecraft Earth was designed around free movement and collaborative play – two things that have become near impossible in the current global situation,” Microsoft-owned Mojang said on Tuesday.
“As a result, we have made the difficult decision to re-allocate our resources to other areas that provide value to the Minecraft community and to end support for Minecraft Earth in June 2021.”
The studio has today released the game’s final update, which is designed to make the remaining months of playtime as fun as possible.
Among other features, the final build of the game removes real-money transactions, reduces ruby costs and time requirements for crafting and smelting, replaces unused crafting and smelting boosts with equivalent radius boosts, and grants a set of character creator items to players who sign in before its shutdown.
In a Minecraft Earth closure FAQ, Mojang said any players who have ever spent money in the game will receive a limited-time token to download Minecraft (Bedrock) on their mobile platform.
Users with earned or purchased rubies on their account are encouraged to use them on in-game content like character creator items, which will remain on players’ accounts and are usable in Minecraft (Bedrock).
“All players with paid ruby balances will be granted Minecoins, which you can use on the Minecraft Marketplace to purchase skin and texture packs, maps, and even minigames,” Mojang said.
It added: “We’re eternally grateful for the amazing talent in the Minecraft community. This was not an easy decision, and we’re doing everything we can to make sure you get the most out of Minecraft Earth before it sunsets.”
