MultiVersus unlockables guide: Characters, variants, taunts, emotes and more

This MultiVersus unlockables guide will give you all the information on how to unlock every character, skin, ringout VFX, emote, taunt, announcer pack, profile icon and banner in the game.

The closed alpha of MultiVersus is currently underway, and there’s a whole host of unlockable content to be found.

While much of this can be unlocked through the game’s Battle Pass system, that isn’t the case across the board, so it can be a little awkward figuring out the full list of unlockables.

Note: This guide currently relates to the closed alpha for MultiVersus, and details are subject to change in the future. We will update this guide when the open beta launches in July, and will continue to update it with more characters as they’re added to the beta and the final release.

MultiVersus guide – Character unlocks

Of the 15 characters available in MultiVersus, five of them are locked at first.

You can unlock them by spending coins, which are earned by playing matches.

Coins are earned by fighting, winning, levelling up your profile and hitting certain Battle Pass milestones.

MultiVersus guide – Variant unlocks

Seven of the characters in the closed alpha have special skins (known here as ‘variants’) which can be unlocked.

Most of these are unlocked through the Battle Pass, but not all of them.

MultiVersus guide – Ringout VFX animation unlocks

MultiVersus lets you set a special animation that plays whenever you knock an opponent off the stage for a KO.

There are a couple of default animations available (mainly Game of Thrones ones) when you start the closed alpha but most of the good ones are locked away.

MultiVersus guide – Taunt unlocks

Each character comes with their own default taunt, but some have extra ones that can be unlocked.

As of the closed alpha, eight characters have unlockable taunts, and all of them (except Taz’s taunt) are unlocked via the Battle Pass.

MultiVersus guide – Emote unlocks

As well as taunts, players can also unlock special emotes.

These act like taunts, but can be used by any character (even if they show a different character).

They can also be assigned to directions on the D-Pad and used like taunts, meaning players can mix up taunts and emotes while fighting.

MultiVersus guide – Profile icon unlocks

MultiVersus lets you set your own player profile icon, to let you show off a bit while playing online.

There are a bunch of these in the closed alpha, but most are locked away.

Some can be found in the Battle Pass, while most (but not all) of the characters also have their own icons which can be unlocked by levelling them up to a certain Mastery Level.

MultiVersus guide – Banner unlocks

MultiVersus also lets you set a banner, which appears behind your character in the match-up screen before you start an online fight.

When you first start the closed alpha you only get a generic, single-colour banner, while the rest are all locked.
