MultiVersus Arya Stark guide – Who is Arya Stark?
Arya Stark is one of the roughly 17 million characters in George R. R. Martin’s epic fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, and its TV adaptation Game of Thrones.
As the youngest daughter of Lord Ned Stark and Lady Catelyn Stark, Arya has no interest in what is considered traditional ‘ladylike’ behaviour in Westeros, and prefers exploring outdoors and riding her horse.
After being given a sword by her half-brother Jon Snow, which she names Needle, Arya develops her skills in the Braavosi ‘water dance’ style of fencing.
She’s also a ‘skinchanger’, which means she can enter the mind of an animal and control its actions – usually her direwolf, Nymeria.
Arya was played by Maisie Williams in Game of Thrones, and Williams returns to reprise the role in MultiVersus.
MultiVersus Arya Stark guide – Fighting strategies
Arya is an ‘assassin’ character, which means she’s fast and best suited to close-quarters combat.
Because she’s a bit of a sneaky type, Arya’s melee attacks do more damage if they hit the enemy from behind.
Any time she successfully dodges an attack, she’ll also get a short ‘turn buff’ – this causes the opponent to turn away the next time she hits them, guaranteeing she’ll hit their back.
She also has the bizarre ability to steal her opponent’s face, meaning she can perform some of their moves.
This isn’t quite as flexible as Kirby’s move-stealing move in Smash Bros, but it does expand her potential repertoire of moves nonetheless.
When Arya scores a KO, she spawns a pie. This can be eaten by other opponents for some health but also makes them slower.
She also gains rage when her partner is KO’ed – while she has rage active, her next landed attack gives her opponent a ‘weakened’ status.
MultiVersus Arya Stark guide – Moves
(Neutral, ground or air)
Arya is the Kirby of MultiVersus (well, in a sense), because she has the ability to steal her opponent’s face and turn into them.
Perform the Face-Stealer move successfully and you’ll see a message saying “face stolen”.
Once you’ve stolen an opponent’s face you can do one of two things. You can either press the Neutral Special command again to perform a taunt disguised as your opponent, which stuns them.
Or, you can press the Neutral Attack command to turn into your opponent and perform their own Neutral Attack, up to five times.
This theoretically means that by stealing the face of someone with an unusual neutral attack (like Reindog with its projectile), Arya can add another dimension to her offensive arsenal.
(Side, ground or air)
Performing this move makes Arya throw a knife at her opponent, which can stick to them. This only does very minimal damage.
While the knife is stuck in your opponent, though, doing the Side Special command again makes Arya dash quickly to them, doing more damage to them.
The knife has a cooldown period, and while it’s recharging the Side Special command instead pulls off a useful spinning forward stab that breaks an opponent’s armour.
Cooldown is also quicker for as long as the knife is stuck to your opponent.
(Up, ground or air)
The Dagger Slash makes Arya swipe her knife upwards in an attempt to catch an opponent above her.
While at first glance this is a fairly basic move, there’s one quirk to it that you need to pay attention to.
When Arya makes contact with the Dagger Slash, she will then quickly dash diagonally upwards in the direction she hit them. So if you hit them to the right, she will dash up and right.
Because of this, while the Dagger Slash can be used in mid-air, it’s not advisable to do it at the very top of the stage because you might KO yourself.
(Down, ground or air)
Doing the Blade Sharpener causes Arya to dash to a nearby ally (or stand on her own if there isn’t one nearby) and give both her and her ally a turn buff.
This turns their hands purple, allowing them to break the opponent’s armour with their next attack.
The turn buff is particularly useful for Arya, because it not only breaks amour, it also turns the opponent to face away from her as she attacks.
Since her attacks do more damage from behind, the Blade Sharpener essentially gives Arya the equivalent of a ‘critical hit’, and one that can’t be blocked by armour.
