Sony is releasing a God of War PS5 4K/60 optimisation patch tomorrow
New default setting will offer 4K and 60fps
Santa Monica Studio will release a God of War PlayStation 5 optimisation patch on February 2, it’s announced.
On PlayStation 4 Pro, the current video graphics options let players choose between two modes, one which favours performance and one that favours resolution.
Designed to get the best out of the last-gen game when played on PS5 via backwards compatibility, the new update introduces a default setting which runs God of War in 4K resolution (checkerboard) and at 60 frames per second.
The 4K checkerboard / 60fps was already available in God of War on PS5 via the unpatched disc version, though the new patch will seemingly make this available to all players.
Santa Monica Studio is currently developing God of War Ragnarök, the follow-up to 2018’s PS4 exclusive action-adventure game. while a recent job ad suggested it’s also working on a second unannounced project.
Unlike previous entries in the long-running series, which were inspired by Greek mythology, God of War is loosely based on Norse mythology.
The series reboot was a critical and commercial success, winning multiple Game of the Year awards and selling over 10 million copies.
God of War is included in the PlayStation Plus Collection, a library of 20 PS4 games which PS Plus subscribers can play on PS5.
Its sequel was announced via a brief teaser last September for release on PS5 in 2021, although nothing more has been heard of the project since.
PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan recently refused to comment on whether God of War Ragnarök will be released for PS4 as well as PS5.
Asked whether the game will be released for PS4, Ryan told The Telegraph last year: “Sorry. I’ve got nothing to say about that today.”
In September 2020 Sony confirmed that several games previously thought to be PS5 exclusives would also be released for PS4, including next-gen launch titles Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales and Sackboy A Big Adventure, and Horizon Forbidden West, which is scheduled for release in the second half of next year.
